Blogging: What is it and how can teachers use it in their classrooms?

A blog is a tool that is used on social media to share ideas and engage in conversations (Oliver and Coble, 2016). Most blogs have a series of posts that can address multiple topics. Normally, blogging software can be very easy to use and flexible to allow the creator to customize the style of the blog as well as how it is set up. Blogging can help someone build a personal brand, improve writing, coding, and/or networking skills, and can even be a way to make money (Agarwal et al., 2023). Blogs can be a creative and useful tool to use in an educational setting as well. Blogs can help bring out students’ creativity when it comes to communication. Most blogs include tools for commenting and discussion, which enables students to engage in conversation with others about their ideas (Oliver and Coble, 2016). Student writing can often be seen only by their teacher or parents. Blogs can help students’ writing be seen by the public which can allow for them to see value in their academic writing.

Teachers can use a class blog to publish assignments, classroom resources, keep parents up to date, and help students improve their writing skills (Pappas, 2013).

Based on this research, I would definitely try to use a blog in my future classroom. I think it would be beneficial for my students to help improve their writing and communication skills. I could also use a classroom blog to help engage my students in classroom discussion. Using a blog in my class would also allow me to share information and helpful resources with my students and their parents. Blogging can be a fun, creative, and beneficial tool that any teacher can utilize in their classroom!
